RADIANS Ph.D. student Sean O’Brien led a workshop where he taught North Carolina public high school science teachers how to build a cloud chamber, which detects individual particles of ionizing radiation by showing their condensation trails.
The teachers built six cloud chambers; they used them to view cosmic rays and small radiation sources, and they learned how a magnet can bend the path of alpha particles. The teachers took their cloud chambers back to their respective schools; they will use them in their future high school science classes.
